An island’s history is held in more than written records. It lives in the people who remember its changing shores, its familiar paths and the routines of another time.
The Islandaires begins with an invitation to listen. To make room for the memories, knowledge and experiences that individuals carry, and to understand an island through the lives connected to it.
The stories people carry
A childhood recollection can open a conversation about how a place has changed. A remembered journey can reveal the relationships between islands. An everyday skill can lead us towards years of practice, teaching and adaptation.
These accounts are personal. Different people may remember the same place differently. Preserving those perspectives means allowing room for uncertainty, detail and the storyteller’s own voice.
An invitation to listen
This series will bring together portraits, conversations and oral histories, with particular attention to older Maldivians and the experiences they wish to share.
Each story will begin with a person: what matters to them, what they remember and how they choose to tell it.
Together, these accounts can help us see the islands through the lives that give them meaning.
